Here are a few tips that will ensure you get the most from your self store space:

• Mark the outside of your boxes with what they contain. Mark every side so that no matter how they are stacked, you should be able to see at least one side of the box. This makes finding things much easier in the future.
• Use boxes that are all the same size. This will make stacking them much easier.
• Make sure your boxes are full. Even if it means packing them out with newspaper or foam. This will prevent boxes from collapsing when others are placed on top.
• Put heavier boxes on the bottom. This will prevent stacks of boxes collapsing.
• When stacking your items, ensure you leave gangways in-between the stack to allow you to access any box easier should you need to retrieve something specific.
• Dismantle furniture and place all small parts into a box. The remaining larger pieces should all be wrapped separately but kept together.
• Any metal items will benefit from being treated with rust preventative first. An easy way to do this is to wipe your items over with an oily rag. This will prevent any possibility of rust forming.
• Use shelving (available for hire onsite) to store smaller things so that they are easier to retrieve.
• Use pallets to raise your item off the floor. This will allow air to freely circulate around your items preventing mildew. (Please remember, even though our storage units are weather proof, anything you introduce which is even slightly damp can affect your other items!)
• If storing fridges or freezers, ensure they have been completely defrosted and cleaned before storing. Store with the fridge or freezer door open to prevent mold and nasty niffs from breeding.
• Use linen or old blankets to protect larger items. Material prevents the build up of condensation in and around your items (especially furniture).

Never store anything flammable or combustible in your storage space. This includes petrol, diesel, oil, cleaning fluids, paint or paint thinners. If you’re storing any machinery that runs on any flammable fuel ensure you drain the tank before it’s stored.
